She taught a way to weave fabric strips together to make pillows.

So my idea was to use the berries in my yard to see which ones could be boiled with water, and what would the color become from water to fabric.

The burning bush produced a peach color. Then I took a scrap strip snd rubbed it in the cooked berries, mashing them into the fibers. A beautiful pumpkin like orange came about.

Wanting to enjoy the weather, I went outside and rolled in the leaves, and pounded leaves into a piece of fabric. Yellow leaves and brown leaves had no color. Green leaves produced green, burgundy leaves and red leaves produced a bluish purple.

I will find other fabrics to make strips into and begin to weave. I may even do some stitching on the strips first.

Me too.
Today, as I was walking down my driveway to mailbox (post box), I noticed my burning bush having berries.

To make a long story short, Spirit Cloth, founder, artist, Jude, has free classes. I have always wanted to take her classes. She is a blessing. So last night and today inspired me to see if I could dye some fabric like muslin.

Not sure if

You can try bittersweet, or boxwood? Even if there are just subtle colors.

You should be able to see some form of differences in shades.

at the color of mullein, it's soft fuzzy green leaves and the leaves

of the burning bush.

Now let me tell you, I go from decorating shabby chic, to folk, to scandinavian to French Parisienne/country to industrial chic
Fireplaces
Outdoor garden ideas

So what am I?

Some people say ecclectic. Some say bohemian. Oh yes, I love those too.

Cant afford to keep changing.

So, because it is fall, the folk art comes in. I have collected pine cones and acorns.
I have been drying hydrangea and herbs, rosehips and artemesia.
I have a couple antique Martha Washington bedspreads. Washed them good and am cutting them up to make pumpkins for decorating, giving as gifts and selling in the vintage shop I have space in. Dont worry, these are older spreads an don't look pretty as spreads anymore. They are being put to better use.

I love looking at what other artists come up with... inspiring. Then I draw my own patterns.

I recently had carpal tunnel surgery and trying to handsew.
The question now is to grunge or not to grunge...
I have made sauce, sold a bag, and now apple butter in the crock pot.
I have an inexpensive dehydrator, so I am going to try to dry them.

I agree, they aren't beautiful, but they are saving me a lot of money and so convenient to go right into my yard and pick.

Baking Blueberry Muffins is my way of using up my store bought blueberries. I always plan to use them in my cereal in the morn, or in pancakes and I forget, and they spoil so today, a cool autumn day in New England.

The recipe called for milk, which I only had skim and half and half in the fridge, so I mixed them, and as you can see, it had no affect at all in changing the way they rose.
I used to make the Jordan Marsh blueberry muffin recipe, but this time, there are so many recipes online I decided to try something different. This recipe has the crumb topping which I didn't use all because it seemed like they had enough on top before putting into the oven. I wish I had used it all now because I saw areas where the crumbs are not. Still good though!fairykinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04911833702528873102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962003522019213999.post-40864550819891564622015-08-12T05:27:00.001-07:002015-08-12T05:27:23.235-07:00Garland, Penants, decorated banners

I have a passion for garlands, penants and banners. I think it is the petite Ness of each part of it. I love the triangles, the little flags, pieces of fabrics torn and tied dangling from ribbon. I did a swap and really wanted to change things up for the gal that was receiving mine. I think I liked how it turned out. I made layers of flowers and topped the petals off with a paper butterfly.
Can you believe this first page turned into the owl. Yes, it is fascinating isn't it? Layered papers, acrylics, a little of this anda little of that, voila. Loved this process, even though I still had to learn, and get out of my typical comfort zone of trying to understand. I bought her class, never was ableft to do it. After a year, you lose the class online and you you can't download them. So thanks to Tam from Lifebook, Juliette had her class on one of the weeks.

Still not sure what makes them different and another name is garland. I think I like garland better; it sounds so much more decorative, holidayish, fancy, pretty...

I wanted to do something different. I have been working in a book called "Creative Call" This book has you ponder the roadblocks in
your life to why you may not be doing art work or your craft; what the stumbling blocks may be, perhaps a negative word came at you in your life to stop you from creating. I have been taking classes, learning techniques, and just wanting to get out of the copy zone, repeating what I see, but wanting to do my own creation. Striving for this has become my hobby. Seeing others come up with their own ideas has somewhat become my envy, which has not been good. So, when a thought comes in my head, I have been trying to seek where it is taking me. So this garland kept crying out to me to do something floral. My partner lives in Australia. When my son saw my garland, he told me that Australia is turning fall, autumn weather, and we are just starting spring in New England. So I thought it would bring my partner back a couple of seasons. She told me she loves turquoise, so that was my addition to the garland.
We only had to make five attachments. So I hand water colored my papers, punched out all of the petals and hand glued them to a backing, a paper butterfly was added, and vintage yellow pearls with a beautiful delicate ribbon. I displayed it all around my house so as to see if it was long enough and if it hung evenly. I may make one for my grand-daughter. She just turned one, so I have time. It is a bit time consuming, but really pretty.
I have been making videos for my grandson in Germany. I won't see him for a long time, and I want to grow with him. He loves art right now, so I am making videos for him. What was so cool about this was that I didn't over think like I always do.

I used the end of celery, the marker cover and the cardboard from coffee shops. I used American craft acrylic pain, Crayola crayons, a chalk marker, pencil, markers, scrap papers, and stickers. I tried to use what he may have access to in Germany.

I had fun and hopefully he will too!
I am so greatful to have copies of these collages. If you ever have artwork placed in a shop of any kind, even a cigar shop like I had mine, have a document written up that your work is there on their premise, because I now can't get a hold of the manager, and am not sure my work is still in her shop. So I am greatful I can make a copy for my portfolio in case she ditched them.fairykinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04911833702528873102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962003522019213999.post-14855081969342417782015-03-07T17:01:00.002-08:002015-03-07T17:01:31.977-08:00Fountain Pen and Ink

If you can, pick up this Journal of Antiques and Collectibles at an antique shop. Great article about the anatomy and history along with other photos of fountain pens from the early 1920's. There is also an article about Norman Rockwell. It is fun finding out about art history and artifacts from different resources than a history book.fairykinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04911833702528873102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962003522019213999.post-8021936327189995762015-03-07T16:52:00.004-08:002015-03-07T16:52:47.267-08:00Book Journal with Girly Cutie Faces and Mixed Media

Love making a journal by buying a second hand book from Sally's and gluing pages together with Ranger glue. This particular journal is square which is so different, so many journals are rectangular, so I like the square. Now, my steps are gesso in as I go. Alot of people like gesso in the whole journal at one time, and then adding paints and inks before they begin to do special collages. I actually like to wait, because my mood changes, and depending what is on my mind, I don't want to have the page prepared for possibly something else. I do gesso most of the time, but I like to keep a change my possibility.
The girl on the right was a head from a vintage children's book, but the little gal was blonde haired, and had a pouty attitude. So I changed her up with black hair, freckles, green eyes and a bit more pleased and happy, maybe because she is having a cup of tea and pretty colored cupcakes.

I have been practicing mixed media portraiture for about 6 years now. I started with Suzi Blu, Milliande, and Willowing. I am now working out of Jane Davenport's book Beautiful Faces and loving it. Effy Wild did a short tutorial on making feathers, so that I did and made my beautiful face an outfit of feathers to highlight her eyes. Kind of like putting make-up on a two dimensional doll making her look 3 dimensional. I am also working on regular portraits. I figure in about 2-3 years, I will have accomplished the portrait.
You try the same, use copper or bronze with silver, with zinc, or pewter, have candles burn with a glass urn, a candle from the Dollar Store, candles are elegant, almost anything goes, mix colors of candles. I am using only white for Christmas 2014 in my dining room because I want plain.
Christmas is here and you want to be a bit different this year. Pick on idea from the Christmas inspirations you see, pick just one, and try to copy it.

Today, I found my old bible and some vintage lace. You may not have vintage, that is ok. Take a thick book, rip off the cover, make a good cup of strong coffee or tea, and rub the book with the coffee or tea. Do it on the edges of the book, the binding and the first few pages and the last couple. Let it dry. In a hurry, take your blow dryer and dry it. Dip your ribbon or lace in the coffee or tea too. When dyed to the darkness in color that you like, and dried, wrap it around the book or tie it. If you have twine, or a thin rope, wrap that too. Add a Christmas post card on top of the book, then tie it.

This makes a beautiful gift too to a friend that may have everything, but needs a bit of something different for their house.
Hello Indian Summer- Drying Hydrangeas

I am starting to say goodbye to summer, Hello Indian summerand drying my hydrangeas. When I was a kid, I don't think I ever gave it thought to why we call this part of the season Indian Summer, you know what I don't think I know why today, only that it means summer is gone, fall is here, almost winter, and it is hot out.

I enjoy it so much, I just need to go out and pick dried left over seed pods and dried flower heads, walk through the leaves and smell that dampened grass, and browned leaf smell, looking for acorns and broken walnuts, gathering my left over hydrangeas to stick into nooks and crannies in my kitchen, my fireplace mantel, my glass vase in my bedroom. I love the pinkish, purplish, creamish, brownish little colored petals.

Hydrangeas

Thinking of making a couple of wreaths out of these snowballs to some of you and hydrangeas to others...I got creative and made a huge natural bouquet of flowers to create a heart. I think I will try to make a smaller version of this idea and maybe even try to sell a couple wreaths.

Some people call them snowballs, so many types of these flowers.
At Cape Cod, people have purple and blue ones next to their entrances.

How to dry

2-3 Methods

1. Put a bunchanged in a vase filled with water and let the water evaporate.

2. Tie a bunch of the flowers with longer stems together and hang in a dry area of your house for at least amonth.

3. Put the flowers with short stems and fill a basket and dry naturally.

4. Put the flowers with , on stems in a vase and dry.

The problem with hydrangeas is that sometimes they may dry too brown or the flower petals whither, anand that may be from cutting them too early when they are not fully bloomed. Experimen a couple of the ways I suggested, and see what your favorite look is. These that you see in the above pictures are a different type. There are hundreds. They take years to mature. You wI'll see some in people's yards that look like bushes, and some that look like weeping trees.

This is my favorite. I like having plants I can use to decorate.

ALSO, you can keep them for 2-3 years, I have.

I have only known the simplicity of crocheting; not fancy stitches, in fact I had to buy a chart to keep in my bag and look to remember "now how many times do I yarn over for a double crochet, or a triple crochet. I started a dish cloth or what I always call a dish rag swap. So includingmyself, I have 9 ladies. This is the simple dish "rag" that I made, white, with a red scalloped edge and a little apple applique.
This pattern was 25 chains and single crochet.
Last week I was visiting a family member, and she had received a dish cloth as a gift but she didn't like it and I asked her why. We came to the conclusion that it was made too large. So do take NOTE, when you are making a dish cloth, think about how large you would like it. After I made this cloth, and added the edging, I think it may just a bit too large, so next time I will do 20 chains instead of 25.fairykinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04911833702528873102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6962003522019213999.post-9415967493310160252014-09-09T22:48:00.001-07:002014-09-09T22:48:47.121-07:00Knitted Heart dish ragCute little knitted heart dish rag. It is made out of 100 percent cotton yarn.
It took two nights to make. It shouldn't have though, but for some reason even though I count and cross off rows on the pattern, I still sometimes make mistakes or just don't get the pattern. I spent four hours knitting a round dish rag the other night, and gave up. When I read the pattern, it looks easy to me, but it just does not come out, so I wonder if it is written wrong, or what on earth I am misunderstanding.
I know that these knitted pieces take a long time, and I could buy one for cheaper at the Dollar Tree, but it is the satisfaction of making something, having my hands not be idle, and they work really well washing dishes. I made one for a friend years ago, and she said she loved it so much, she even hand sewed it when it was wearing out.
So if you see them at yard sales, or at the Salvation Army, and they have not been used and just donated, buy them and use them. Wrap a bar of soap I one with a ribbon and give as a gift.

Go crazy this fall and , make a fall or autumn arrangement out of something different and unusual like my primitive, shabby chic antique, vintage bag.

I always seem to overdo my arrangements, packing them to the brim, and then taking stuff out and then thinking it is not enough. After making the arrangement, I wonder, mmmm, should I put it on the table and leave it alone? Should I add another decoration next to it? Do I want that decoration where I was originally planning on putting it or somewhere different. Question, is this a sign of discontentment?:)

Believe it or not, this bag could be considered primitive, and If I paint it or shabby it up with cream, or white, it will be shabby chic. I can never decide. I love folk and primitive and I love shabby chic.

So, find a container of some sort, a basket, a child's toy like a truck, a rusty bucket or I have a better idea, run down to the yard sale down the street, or an antique shop even if you have never gone in one, and pick up something that intrigues you.

All you have to do is put it on a table, and plop some inexpensive fall silks around it.
It really is that easy and your fall arrangement will be unlike anyones.

I am actually going to shabby chic this bag, stay tuned.
The flowers are Dollar Tree sprigs I have been collecting for
a few years now, "recycled" a felt pumpkin, a wooden crow
A wooden primitive Harvest sign, and a vintage fish net and doctor's bag which by the way, I remember the doctor coming to my house when I was about 6 and had the flu. MMMMM, I have the flu now too, mmmm symbolic isn't it?
